S14 Ep153: Gladiators Without Shields – The 2026 ProConti Review
Épisodes
We begin a trilogy of podcasts assessing how every major team fared in the 2026 season by focusing on the social climbers of the pro cycling hierarchy, those in the ProTeam or ‘Pro Conti’ division. Daniel Friebe is joined by Larry Warbasse, who raced for one of the best-performing outfits in that category in 2026, Tudor Pro Cycling. With Larry, we discuss the unseen costs of the current divisional system before looking more closely at the relevant teams’ performances. There’s also time for Larry’s comprehensive self-appraisal and our thoughts about Primož Roglič’s likely destination in 2027. Episode sponsor IC Trainer Do you train indoors in winter? The 2027 Tour de France routes were presented on Thursday in Paris – and we, like everyone else in cycling, were impatient to see what Christian Prudhomme had in store for Tadej Pogačar and the men who’ll try to take his crown next July. Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie first turn their attention to the other big news stories of the week. Picnic-PostNL have had a bruising year, and their troubles continue with Dutch national broadcaster NOS making damning claims about the culture in the team. We give our view in the episode. It’s also been a busy few days in both the scrap for UCI rankings points and the transfer market. You’ll get updates on both here. The majority of this week’s dispatch is of course dedicated to the men’s Tour route unveiled on Thursday. Daniel and Lionel can’t quite make up their mind whether it’s a stinker or a belter. But they certainly have plenty to say on the matter… Episode sponsors IC Trainer Do you train indoors in winter? Join us on the transfer merry-go-round as Rose Manley, Rebecca Charlton and Lizzy Banks take a closer look at all the big deals at play in the women’s peloton. Kasia Niewiadoma’s transfer after nine years at Canyon SRAM may have felt like a long time coming but will Lidl-Trek really offer the former Tour de France champion the fresh start she is looking for? And how will Movistar balance their potential leadership duo of Marlen Reusser and Paula Blasi if the Spaniard’s rumoured move comes off? Plus other notable changes for Pfeiffer Georgi, Cedrine Kerbaol and Lily Williams. Also on the agenda: losing our balls, teamwomanananship and exploding ovens. Cycling’s 2026 Monuments concluded with Il Lombardia in Italy at the weekend – and the “Race of the Falling Leaves” duly gave us the latest opportunity to fawn over cycling’s brightest rising star, Paul Seixas. Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie review the “Seixocet’s” historic and emphatic victory in Como at the weekend and ponder what it means for the sport, Seixas himself and Tadej Pogačar. We also look at two very different, much less successful performances from the other two pre-race favourites, Remco Evenepoel and Isaac del Toro. In other news, Primoz Roglič and Egan Bernal may be retiring…or may not. We meditate on that as well as Giulio Ciccone and Filippo Ganna respectively leaving and joining Lidl-Trek. One of the busiest weeks of the racing season serves up a handful of big races to review, a Monument on the horizon…and what feels like a necessary discussion about whether the calendar is, indeed, much too busy. The UCI’s consultation on the future of the sport has certainly given us food for thought. Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie give their reaction to the findings published this week and a few suggestions of their own. There’s also a look back at Remco Evenepoel’s Euros road race victory, analysis of the glut of Italian semi-classics over the last few days, plus some closing thoughts on the career of Nairo Quintana. Just a few days on from Brandon McNulty’s surprise victory in the World Championship road race in Montreal, his national team-mate Larry Warbasse takes us inside a rainbow jersey-winning performance by Team USA. Larry leads us behind the scenes of the American team’s pre-race meetings, their on-the-road tactics and, of course, also the after-party. He has his say on whether banning race radios could improve all races and not just the Worlds, plus those rumours a secret McNulty-Del Toro accord. Join Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie as they recap the men’s World Championships Road Race in Montreal. They ask whether there's been a more enjoyable race for the rainbow jersey in recent men's elite road race history, and whether the eventual winner was the biggest surprise champion since Igor Astarloa (who also won his world title on Canadian soil in 2003). There's an attempt to break down the tactics and strategy in an aggressive, attacking and ever-changing race. The Men’s World Road Race Championship will take place in Montreal this weekend without its defending champion, a crash in the Vuelta a España having seemingly ended Tadej Pogačar’s 2026 season. Of course Pogačar had finally looked set to win the Vuelta…finally, because this is the last Grand Tour missing from his collection, and it had been a long time coming. The SlovAlien had in fact made his Grand Tour debut in the Vuelta in 2019 and never returned until this year. That first appearance, though, has gone down in cycling history as the race, the moment that lit the spark, the beginning of a one-man firestorm that would tear through professional cycling. Pogačar finished it with three stage wins and a place on the podium in Madrid. We had quite simply never seen anything like it. In this special KM0 episode, Daniel Friebe revisits and relives that 2019 Vuelta, speaking to key witnesses and delving into his own memories, those of Dani Arribas and Michele Pelacci. Ignition was written and produced by Daniel Friebe. Episode sponsors: Bikmo The Cycling Podcast is supported by Bikmo, cycle insurance built for cyclists who actually ride. The World Championships in Montreal, Canada, got underway with Remco Evenepoel’s fourth straight win in the men’s TT at the weekend. In this episode we both review the Belgian “Aerobullet’s” latest triumph and look ahead to the road race on Sunday. First of all, Daniel Friebe and Lionel BIrnie react to rumours of Tadej Pogacar changing his mind and planning to return before the end of the season. It’s then full focus on the Worlds and, among other hot talking points, whether Remco can do the TT-RR double. In the final part of the episode, we hear from Velon chief Graham Bartlett about the new tracking device which should ensure that tragedies like Muriel Furrer’s death in the Worlds two years ago never happen again. With the World Championships well underway in Canada, Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Rebecca Charlton discuss all the happenings over in Montreal. They discuss a redemptive win for Marlen Reusser, a standout performance by Zoe Backstedt in her first ever women’s elite World Championships time trial and they ask what does Demi Vollering being caught by Reusser mean for the Dutchwoman’s hopes at the road race later in the week? For the mini feature we hear from two Canadian cyclists who have shone this year: Maggie Coles Lyster of Human Powered Health and current world champion Magdaleine Vallieres about their upbringings in the country. Friends of the Podcast you can also enjoy a full length interview with Vallieres in which she discusses her move into the elite ranks, her difficult time at the World Cycling Centre and that incredible shock win. Rose, Denny and Rebecca also cast ahead to this weekend’s road race to pick out what could be the key moments on the course and the key contenders for the title. Also on the agenda: co-bletherers, Hallmark Christmas movies and how aero is your face? Join Lionel Birnie and Graham Willgoss as they look back at the weekend's two World Tour one-day races in Canada. As expected on such demanding courses, the cream rose to the top, but what does this tell us ahead of the UCI World Championships, which take place in Canada in just over a week's time. Remco Evenepoel won the GP de Québec and Isaac del Toro took the GP de Montréal, catapulting themselves to the top of the list of favourites for the rainbow jersey in the men's road race in the absence of reigning champion Tadej Pogačar, who is out injured after crashing at the Vuelta. But what other clues did we garner from the two races? And who else is on the early list of favourites? We also analyse the big transfers of the week, with Felix Gall and Gregor Muhlberger swapping Decathlon for Lidl-Trek next season. Gall is an intriguing signing – bolstering Lidl-Trek's list of Grand Tour riders. After finishing on the podium at both the Giro and the Vuelta this season, the Austrian is staking a claim to be considered the best of the rest – but is he likely to be able to match the likes of Del Toro and Seixas? We also look at Ben Turner's move from Netcompany-Ineos to Soudal-Safety Jogger. With the Vuelta a España pausing for its second rest day before the final week resumes on Tuesday, Lionel Birnie and Graham Willgoss get together to recap the 2026 men's Tour of Britain. Five days of racing took the peloton from Lincoln, famous for hosting one of the greatest single-day races on the British calendar, to the Borders of Scotland. We also discuss two riders at opposite ends of their career – Ben Swift, who completed the Tour of Britain in his 18th and final season as a professional rider, and Ben Wiggins, who is aiming for a pro contract and raced very aggressively on the final day to secure a place in the overall top ten for the young Great Britain team. Graham talks to Wiggins, son of the 2013 Tour of Britain champion, Bradley, about his week on the road and aim for the upcoming World Championships, where he will ride the under-23 time trial. The 2026 Vuelta a España rolls out from Monte Carlo at the weekend, and we’ll be on the ground for the eleventh straight year to bring you all of the action, starting with our race preview. Before Daniel Friebe and Larry Warbasse assess the route and riders, we reflect on the devastating passing of Finlay Tarling in last week’s Volta a Portugal. Harrison Wood was also racing in the Volta. He gives us the rider’s perspective of what occurred. For our look ahead to the Vuelta, Larry honestly answers the question of whether he or any of the other riders in the field can realistically hope to beat Tadej Pogačar (clue: it’s a fairly resounding ‘no’). Having established that, we look closely at a decidedly spicy route and what opportunities it may offer riders not targeting the GC. In Loving Memory of Finlay Tarling Following the tragic death of Finlay Tarling in stage 8 of the Volta a Portugal, a fund has been set up, with the blessing of his parents and in Finlay’s name, with the goal of providing an opportunity to help future generations of young Welsh riders. The people demanded – well, some of them asked – for a mash-up episode. At Alpe d’Huez, we gathered in a car park (a typically glamorous recording location) to record a bonus episode, which will go out later this week. The Cycling Podcast x Escape Collective. Or Escape Collective + The Cycling Podcast, if you prefer. Graham and I joined Caley Fretz and Iain Treloar for a freewheeling, sometimes whimsical chat about life on the road at the Tour de France, this year’s race, and how the media landscape has continued to evolve. Caley was an early guest on The Cycling Podcast way back in 2014, when he worked for VeloNews. In recent years, having established the Escape Collective, they’ve established their own podcast and have often joked about sharing the mic for a one-off episode. Midway through the Tour we found ourselves at the same hotel – the charming Saint Regis in Chalon-sur-Saône – and they were recording their episode as we were enjoying dinner. At some point, Caley shouted over and I joined them for a few minutes. Anyway, our people got together with their people, we thrashed out the terms and quibbled over the fine details and spent 40 minutes or so chatting about the Tour. We know that many listeners tune in to both podcasts so hopefully you’ll enjoy the exchange of anecdotes and ideas in the episode.

Go to thecyclingpodcast.com In the final episode of our behind-the-scenes look at Paul Seixas’s début Tour de France, we see the 19-year-old launch his final bid to make the podium in Paris. He will ultimately fall short, but his first Tour will still have been a success. Whether we’re more confident now of France’s 41-year Tour drought ending soon is, however, a moot point. In the final instalment of our Tour-long series, we hear from Seixas, team-mates and a man who’ll be key to the direction of his future: Décathlon CMA CGM chief Dominique Serieys.

Yes it is that time again, we’re rolling out the cheeseboard once more as we preview this year’s Tour de France Femmes. Join Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Lizzy Banks as they discuss the route and top contenders in what is set to be the closest fought Grand Tour in recent memory. We also hear from Jeremy Whittle, author of Ventoux: Sacrifice and Suffering on the Giant of Provence about the history and legend of the fabled climb that makes its Tour de France Femmes debut this year.
